Before you mastered your own cookie recipe, someone had to invent it. That credit goes to Ruth Wakefield, who ran the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts during the 1930s. One day, she added chopped chocolate to her cookie dough expecting it to melt evenly—only to find that the pieces held their shape and transformed her cookies forever.
Ingredients
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
(Optional) 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter with the granulated sugar and brown sugar using a hand mixer or stand mixer. Mix until light and fluffy—about 2–3 minutes.
Add in the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Mix on low speed until just combined. Don’t overmix.
Fold in the chocolate chips (and optional nuts) with a spatula until evenly distributed.
Use a cookie scoop or spoon to drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto your prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown but the centers still look slightly soft.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 3–5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
